Measure the amount of oat milk you'll need by pouring the oat milk into your mug and then pouring it into a small pot over medium heat on the stove.
Add a sweetener of your choice plus vanilla extract and any other desired flavouring. I like to use stevia (sugar is fine too) and peppermint extract.
Before adding the cocoa powder into the oat milk, make it into a paste with a little of the milk. This will keep it from being lumpy in the hot chocolate.
Continue adding more and more milk to the cocoa paste until it is pourable, and then pour it into the rest of the oat milk.
I like to add a pinch of cinnamon and chili powder to my hot chocolate. It elevates the warmth and adds an addictive hint of spice.
Once everything is fully mixed into the oat milk and smooth, pour it back into your mug and allow it to cool for a few minutes before sipping.
Serve with whipped cream, coconut whipped cream (linked), marshmallows or vegan marshmallows, sprinkles and a dusting of cocoa powder.
